Spotlight on Radford Swimming Club

Welcome to our “Base Clubs in the Spotlight” series, celebrating the culture, history, and community impact of swimming clubs. This time, the focus turns to Radford Swimming Club — a club with deep roots in Nottingham City and a reputation for blending competitive ambition with a strong sense of community.

With roots stretching back over 70 years, Radford is proud to be the only swimming club solely based in Nottingham City — known for combining competitive ambition with a genuinely welcoming, family-friendly culture.

Club Purpose and Philosophy

Radford exists to help swimmers enjoy the journey of competitive swimming — developing skills, confidence and resilience along the way. The club takes a long-term view, focusing on strong technique and steady progression rather than rushed results.

From first structured sessions through to County, Regional and National competition, swimmers are supported at every stage, encouraged to progress at a pace that suits them while still being challenged to grow.

A History in Nottingham City

Founded in 1952 and originally formed as a water polo club, Radford has been part of Nottingham’s sporting story for generations. Next year, the club celebrates its Diamond Anniversary — a milestone that reflects decades of dedication, adaptability and community spirit.

Training takes place across several city venues, including:

  • Harvey Hadden Sports Village
  • Ken Martin Leisure Centre
  • Southglade Leisure Centre
  • University of Nottingham David Ross Sports Village

A Swimmer’s Route Through Radford

Radford’s squad structure is clearly defined, giving swimmers and families confidence about where they are — and where they can go next.

  • Splash Squad offers a supportive first step into competitive swimming, building confidence and all four strokes.
  • Development Squad introduces racing skills, diving and a deeper understanding of training.
  • Junior and Senior Performance Squads support swimmers targeting County, Regional and beyond, with structured training that matches growing ambition.

Across all squads, team galas, leagues and club events play a big role, helping swimmers develop not just as athletes, but as teammates.

More Than a Swimming Club

Ask families what makes Radford special, and they’ll tell you: it feels like a community. Parents, carers and volunteers are central to the club’s success — whether cheering poolside, helping at meets or supporting events.

Off the blocks, the social side matters just as much. Highlights include:

  • An annual presentation evening celebrating achievements in and out of the pool
  • Our Dean Anscombe Open Meet held in memory of a much-loved coach.
  • Swim camps that combine skill development with fun and friendship
  • Social events and annual family pantomime trip

It’s these moments that turn teammates into friends — and clubs into communities.

Looking Ahead

Radford Swimming Club welcomes swimmers from the age of six. Families interested in joining can explore the club via Radford’s Facebook page (Radford Swimming Club, Nottingham. | Facebook) or website (Radford SC Home Page), where you can book a trial.

For those looking for clear progression, competitive opportunity and a warm Nottingham welcome, Radford Swimming Club continues to be a place where swimmers — and families — can thrive.
